Dworkin, P. H., Bell, B. B., and Mirowski, M. (1973). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 48, 382. Propranolol in supraventricular tachycardias of childhood. 9 children with supraventricular tachycardias refractory to conventional therapy were treated with propranolol. In 3 children normal sinus rhythm was restored. In 3 others frequency of paroxysmal arrhythmias was decreased. In 1 reduction of ventricular response to the ectopic rhythm was achieved, and in 2 remaining patients, propranolol had no effect. The dosage of propranolol ranged from 0 *5 to 4 0 mg/kg per day, given orally, with few side effects. It appears that propranolol can play an important role in treatment of supraventricular arrhythmias of childhood unresponsive to conventional therapy.

or digitalis and quinidine, prevented tachyeardia in five patients and slowed it in one. Our cases suggest the following: (1) Recurrent supraventricular tachycardia in patients without the WPW syndrome may frequently be caused by a reciprocal mechanism. (2) The diagnosis of reciprocating tachycardia should be suspected when (a) the tachycardia recurs within minutes of its termination, (b) the o...
متن کاملUse of the diving reflex to treat supraventricular tachycardia in an infant.
A simple method for treating supraventricular tachycardias is described--ice cubes are applied to the nose and upper lip. It should be particularly useful in younger children and depends on a sound physiological principle.
متن کاملSerial electrophysiologic testing of multiple drugs in patients with atrioventricular nodal reentrant paroxysmal tachycardia.
Serial electrophysiologic testing of multiple drugs was performed in 21 patients with recurrent atrioventricular (AV) nodal reentrant paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). All patients had reproducible sustained PSVT induced before drug administration. Serial daily PSVT induction was attempted after administration of i.v. ouabain (0.01 mg/kg) (16 patients), i.v. propranolol (0.1 mg/kg...
متن کاملCritical dose of digoxin for treating supraventricular tachycardias after heart surgery.
This study was conducted to ascertain if critical peak body stores of digoxin were needed to protect patients from the debilities that result from supraventricular tachycardias occurring after open heart operations. We gave digoxin peak body stores of 15 micrograms/kg of lean body weight to 100 consecutive patients after open heart operations. If supraventricular tachycardias persisted four hou...
متن کاملABC of clinical electrocardiography. Junctional tachycardias.
Any tachyarrhythmia arising from the atria or the atrioventricular junction is a supraventricular tachycardia. In clinical practice, however, the term supraventricular tachycardia is reserved for atrial tachycardias and arrhythmias arising from the region of the atrioventricular junction as a result of a re-entry mechanism (junctional tachycardias). The most common junctional tachycardias are a...
